About Us

St. George Indian Orthodox church, Brisbane is one of the independent parishes of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church also known as the Indian Orthodox Church. During the early 1990’s several Keralites migrated to Australia in search of better life for themselves and their families. With the growing number of Orthodox families, the need was felt to establish a church following Indian orthodox tradition. As a result the first Holy Qurbana in Brisbane, was celebrated on 27th October 2007.

The parish was officially formed on 15th April 2008 under the guidance and leadership of His Grace Dr. Yakoob Mar Irenaios, Metropolitan of Madras Diocese and was named St. George Indian Orthodox Church Brisbane. Rev Fr. Thomas Varghese (Saji Achen, Sydney) as the first vicar. As the Membership of the parish grew steadily, our present metropolitan His Grace Dr Yuhanon Mar Diascoros was gracious to appoint a full time vicar on 5th November 2010. Since then Brisbane parish under the leadership of Rev Fr. Vinod George, followed by Rev. Fr.James Philip and Rev. Fr. Ajish V Alex has been celebrating Holy Qurbana regularly at 27 Hawtree St, Moorooka, Brisbane. Rev. Fr. Jacks Jacob was our vicar from June 2019 until Sep 2022. Our church at MacKenzie was constructed during his tenure. Rev Fr. Liju Samuel is the current vicar of our parish.

The St. George Indian Orthodox church, Brisbane, strives to maintain the faith amongst the Indian Orthodox faithful in the Brisbane community. The Vicar is instrumental in providing spiritual food to the flock. The managing committee, led by the Vicar, overlooks the day to day activities of the parish.

Sunday school remains one of our church’s most powerful ways to affirm our faith as the foundation for living the Orthodox Christian life. Marthamariam samajam is a vibrant association of the women and depends on the intercession of Holy and Ever Virgin Saint Mary, the Mother of our Lord. The Samajam mainly aims at spiritual growth of women. St. George Indian Orthodox Church Brisbane Youth Movement and MGOCSM has made it a priority to bring the youth and students of the church, together to enhance their religious experience. The members have organized many events to bring greater unity to the church. They are greatly involved in the community and seek to learn and better understand the Word of God and to live their daily lives in accordance with Him. Prayer meetings led by the Vicar are held at a member’s residence, once every month which starts at 05.00 PM and runs for an hour. Members and families come together and sing songs followed by evening prayer and devotional address. Divya Bodhanam classes are also held, where the members get a chance to learn about the Theological Training Programme for the Laity.
