Ascension of Christ Service at St George Indian Orthodox Church, Brisbane – Led by Rev. Fr. Liju Samuel

Ascension of Christ Service at St George Indian Orthodox Church, Brisbane – Led by Rev. Fr. Liju Samuel

On Thursday, 29 May 2025, St George Indian Orthodox Church in Brisbane commemorated the Ascension of Christ with a solemn service led by the parish vicar, Rev. Fr. Liju Samuel. This significant event marked 40 days after Easter, following the tradition of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

The service commenced with the traditional All-Night Vigil, a hallmark of the Orthodox liturgical calendar. The Vigil included the Paschal Hours, the singing of the troparion of the day, and the reading of specific Old Testament readings during Vespers. At Matins, the Epitaphios was carried in procession around the church, symbolising Christ's ascension. The Divine Liturgy featured special antiphons, the reading of the Epistle and Gospel, and the singing of the kontakion, all reflecting the theme of Christ's return to the Father.

The congregation gathered in reverence to reflect on the mystery of Christ's ascension and its significance in the Christian faith. The service was a time for the faithful to come together in prayer and worship, strengthening their spiritual bonds.

St George Indian Orthodox Church continues to serve as a beacon of faith and tradition in Brisbane, offering a space for the community to engage in meaningful worship and spiritual growth.
