Oral & Systemic Health Talk by Dr. Boby Thomas | St. George Indian Orthodox Church Brisbane

On Sunday, May 25, 2025, members of the St. Dionysius Orthodox Fellowship gathered for their monthly meeting at St. George Indian Orthodox Church, Brisbane. This month’s session featured an informative and thought-provoking talk by Dr. Boby Thomas, a respected dental practitioner from Sure Smile Dental, Coopers Plains. Her presentation, titled "Oral & Systemic Health", delved into the vital connection between oral hygiene and our overall health.
Dr. Thomas began by outlining how oral health serves as a critical indicator of systemic wellbeing. One of the session’s most eye-opening insights was the serious role inflammation plays in linking poor oral hygiene to chronic diseases. She explained how gum disease, caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar, triggers persistent inflammation in the body—an underlying factor in heart disease, stroke, and even brain health issues like dementia.
This insightful session on dental care, especially highlighting the serious impact poor oral hygiene can have on our heart and brain health, struck a chord with attendees. Dr. Thomas presented current research showing that oral inflammation doesn't just stay in the mouth—it can spread harmful bacteria and inflammatory markers through the bloodstream, affecting major organs over time.
It was truly an eye-opener to realise how important it is to get our teeth professionally cleaned every six months. Regular cleans help control inflammation and reduce the risk of developing gum disease and its wider health consequences. Dr. Thomas also offered practical tips on daily oral care, including proper brushing and flossing techniques, using antiseptic mouth rinses, and maintaining a tooth-friendly diet.
She broke down the science in clear, relatable language and welcomed questions from the audience. A key takeaway was her emphasis on seeing the mouth as the "gateway to the body"—what happens in the mouth doesn’t stay there, and inflammation is the bridge connecting it to wider health outcomes.
The talk concluded with a warm thank-you from the Fellowship, expressing gratitude for Dr. Thomas’s commitment to community health and education. Her compassionate delivery and evidence-based insights made a strong impact and sparked important conversations among attendees.
