¹⁴King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, “John the Baptizer has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

¹⁵But others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.”

¹⁶But Herod, when he heard this, said, “This is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.”

¹⁷For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her.

¹⁸For John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

¹⁹Herodias set herself against him and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t,

²⁰for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.

²¹Then a convenient day came when Herod on his birthday made a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.

²²When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”

²³He swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”

²⁵She came in immediately with haste to the king and requested, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.”

²⁶The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her.

²⁷Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard and commanded to bring John’s head; and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

²⁹When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

¹The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”

²Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

³As time passed, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.

⁴Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,

⁵but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.

⁶Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?

⁷If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

⁸Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

⁹Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?”

¹⁰Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.

¹¹Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

¹²From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

¹³Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

¹⁴Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

¹⁵Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

¹¹When the army of the Chaldeans had withdrawn from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

¹²then Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to receive his portion there, in the middle of the people.

¹³When he was in Benjamin’s gate, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”

¹⁴Then Jeremiah said, “That is false! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.”

¹⁵The princes were angry with Jeremiah, and struck him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison.

¹⁶When Jeremiah had come into the dungeon house and into the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days,

¹⁷then Zedekiah the king sent and had him brought out. The king asked him secretly in his house, “Is there any word from Yahweh?”

¹⁸Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

¹⁹Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you, nor against this land’?

²⁰Now please hear, my lord the king: please let my supplication be presented before you, that you not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”

²¹Then Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah into the court of the guard. They gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

¹²For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

¹³Now who will harm you if you become imitators of that which is good?

¹⁴But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.”

¹⁵But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,

¹⁶having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.

¹⁷For it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing what is right than for doing evil.

¹²കർത്താവിന്റെ കണ്ണു നീതിമാന്മാരുടെ മേലും അവന്റെ ചെവി അവരുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥനെക്കും തുറന്നിരിക്കുന്നു; എന്നാൽ കർത്താവിന്റെ മുഖം ദുഷ്പ്രവൃത്തിക്കാർക്കും പ്രതിക്കുലമായിരിക്കുന്നു.”

³⁶Even as it is written,

³⁷No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

³⁸For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,

³⁹nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

³⁵ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ സ്നേഹത്തിൽനിന്നു നമ്മെ വേർപിരിക്കുന്നതാർ? കഷ്ടതയോ സങ്കടമോ ഉപദ്രവമോ പട്ടിണിയോ നഗ്നതയോ ആപത്തോ വാളോ?

¹At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,

²and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”

³For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

⁴For John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

⁵When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

⁶But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.

⁷Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.

⁸She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer.”

⁹The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,

¹⁰and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.

¹¹His head was brought on a platter and given to the young lady; and she brought it to her mother.

¹²His disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

¹ആ കാലത്തു ഇടപ്രഭുവായ ഹെരോദാവു യേശുവിന്റെ ശ്രുതി കേട്ടിട്ടു:

²അവൻ യോഹന്നാൻ സ്നാപകൻ ; അവൻ മരിച്ചവരുടെ ഇടയിൽ നിന്നു ഉയിർത്തു; അതുകൊണ്ടാകുന്നു ഈ ശക്തികൾ അവനിൽ വ്യാപരിക്കുന്നതു എന്നു തന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരോടു പറഞ്ഞു.

³ഹെരോദാവു തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ ഫീലിപ്പൊസിന്റെ ഭാര്യ ഹെരോദ്യ നിമിത്തം, അവൾ നിനക്കു ഭാര്യയായിരിക്കുന്നതു വിഹിതമല്ല എന്നു

⁴യോഹന്നാൻ അവനോടു പറഞ്ഞതു കൊണ്ടു തന്നേ, അവനെ പിടിച്ചു കെട്ടി തടവിൽ ആക്കിയിരുന്നു.

⁵അവനെ കൊല്ലുവാൻ മനസ്സുണ്ടായിട്ടു പുരുഷാരം അവനെ പ്രവാചകൻ എന്നു എണ്ണുകയാൽ അവരെ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു.

⁶എന്നാൽ ഹെരോദാവിന്റെ ജനനദിവസം ആയപ്പോൾ ഹെരോദ്യയുടെ മകൾ സഭാമദ്ധ്യേ നൃത്തം ചെയ്തു ഹെരോദാവിനെ പ്രസാദിപ്പിച്ചു.

⁷അതുകൊണ്ടു എന്തു ചോദിച്ചാലും അവൾക്കു കൊടുക്കും എന്നു അവൻ സത്യംചെയ്തു വാക്കുകൊടുത്തു.

⁸അവൾ അമ്മയുടെ ഉപദേശപ്രകാരം: യോഹന്നാൻ സ്നാപകന്റെ തല ഒരു താലത്തിൽ തരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

⁹രാജാവു ദുഃഖിച്ചു എങ്കിലും ചെയ്ത സത്യത്തെയും വിരുന്നുകാരെയും വിചാരിച്ചു അതു കൊടുപ്പാൻ കല്പിച്ചു;

¹⁰ആളയച്ചു തടവിൽ യോഹന്നാനെ ശിരഃഛേദം ചെയ്യിച്ചു.

¹¹അവന്റെ തല ഒരു താലത്തിൽ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു ബാലെക്കു കൊടുത്തു; അവൾ അമ്മെക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോയി കൊടുത്തു.

¹²അവന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാർ ചെന്നു ഉടൽ എടുത്തു കുഴിച്ചിട്ടു: പിന്നെ വന്നു യേശുവിനെ അറിയിച്ചു.
